Published on 'Ballad Of...' Magazine online

I'm a menswear photographer and when I shoot editorials
I usually shoot boys.
I don't shoot womenswear much.
Mainly because I don't like it.

Many, many reasons.

Recently, however;
I have been hanging out with my younger sister at home.
She has been doing her homework,
we've been listening to 'robbers' by 1975 and drinking coffee.

I looked at her and thought-
wow, she's so beautiful.

Recently, with all the 'women power' articles ,videos and
trends all over the internet, I thought-
why not take some portraits?

I take photos of people and things that catch my eye anyway.
Moments that I don't want to forget.

I shot her and really wanted to get the photos published after I saw them.

I wrote to Ballad Of... with a message of -
'wanting to let women and girls at all ages know, that they're beautiful, no matter what'.

I truly believe every single girl is beautiful how they were born.
No artificial product should be becoming something permanent to any girl.

YOU shouldn't think you're not good enough.

EMO.

This editorial I have done some time ago,
which was half way through being printed in a magazine.
However, the person who was creating the magazine has
decided to back out from her 'plans'.

It's a shame that people start on their dreams
then back out last minute.
Upsetting others at the same time.

The shoot was based on shooting for GQ Style.
So, more of a commercial shoot rather than a directional.

Inspired by Givenchy A/W 14.

The theme is based on 'men and emotions'.
I think guys are limited to expressing their own feelings...
This shoot represents the side of it in a way,
where the guys have to create their 'invisible mask'
to cover up all their sensitivity and weakness.

A little window to my world.

Summer's nearly over.
Two weeks and I'm finally back at uni.
Seriously,
it's been way too long.

Feels like I'm starting all over again.
New people.
Introducing yourself,
etc.
Not right.

Over the summer, I've had a project set
which was to create a documentary book
on my world.

It's to create a vibe.
Maybe more like- communicate the vibe of my life to the viewers.

I'll publish a few photos.

Won't show you all the photos.
Not cool.
The book is all.

I've already posted some pictures before.
These are new.

Some of you may know, but some might not.

Cars.
All.
Everything.

Boredom is beautiful

If you look , you'll see.
Boredom is beautiful.

It's intriguing , so interesting.

Watching people be bored.
It's almost like one of the most amazing things to watch.

Look with intrigued and fully open eyes,
you'll see.

2 Jul 2014

11 days in 35mm.

Arrived in Poland on the 16th of June/
I was so excited to see all the familiar faces.

I went on my own.
I needed 'me time'.
I need to travel on my own more often. So peaceful.

Obviously, I took a little 'point and shoot' with me.
Didn't want to risk taking my other ones with me as I've only took
hand luggage with me.
Would hate it if they took them away from me.
Weird shit happens at the airports.

Introductory Thursday - Stylist Safiya Yekwai

Copyright 2013- styled by Safiya Yekwai

I hope you're all excited as much as I am about going back to the old style of this blog!
I'll be doing an 'introductory Thursday' post every second Thursday and
will be introducing a new creative person, every time.

This week I've decided to introduce you to an amazing stylist,
which I've had a chance to work with, when I was assisting Jeff Hahn for iD.
She's super nice and has an amazing style!
Here's an interview I've done with Safiya:

1)When did you know you wanted to be a stylist ?
I have always been really interested in art and design but only really got a taste for fashion when I went to college. This was kind of the first time when I realised this could be something I could do as a career. But at the time I thought I wanted to be a designer. My foundation year is when I really realised styling is what I wanted to do and something I felt mix all of the things that I enjoyed in the past (art, clothes, photography, design) in one medium.

2) Do you think there'd be anything else you'd want to do instead of styling ?

I was thinking this the other day actually, tbh I don’t think there is I really love styling and feel that I am always wanting to be better or try and further the way I use clothes to tell a story. Only recently I really realised this is the thing I love doing with all the ups and downs, returns and long days, I always feel so amazed when I see the final outcome.

3) do you prefer to style menswear or womenswear ?

I do like both but if I’m honest I do really love menswear. I think that in past years its become so much more inspiring and has captured my imagination a lot more, designers such as Astrid Anderson and Liam Hodges I feel are real pioneers of the new school of design and I seem to just feel more inspired by new menswear designers and the way they have shown a different and new style of Man with clothing.

4) What's your styling aesthetic?

I really love images that tell a deeper story than just showing a current trend. I love images that tell a story and have some sort of grittiness to them. Early Corrine Day images are my sort of aesthetic, also Ray Petri is one of my all time fav stylist.

5) What are your future goals within your specialism ?

To keep styling and being creative with it, I love working and collaborating with exciting photographers, designers and models. So just want to really keep perfecting my craft and making interesting work.

Decorating night at Aftershock

As I've left on Friday
We've decided to decorate the showroom before I leave
As I've volunteered to paint the kitchen and the bathroom.

Exciting
I like painting .
I don't know why , but I do.

I'll miss the girls at work
But I'm also happy that I will be able to focus on
My photography a bit more again.

So you'll be seeing more photography posts again!

McBUSTED!

My internship has officially finished on the 9th.
I was gonna stay until September, but I can't.

My other job takes over.
Therefore,
I'm finishing this Friday.

On Sunday the 11th, I went to see two of
the most amazing bands from my childhood.
McBUSTED.
They were sooo amazing.
Just no words to explain it.

They were supported by 3 different bands.
Young Brando, EofE and Hollywood Ending.
They were all super amazing too.

It was so amazing to see all of the McFly and Busted live!
They've entered in a 'back to the future' car,
with flames surrounding the whole stage.
McFly members jumped out of the floor.

They've also managed to get a UFO flying disc
into the concert.
All very 'show' like.

I loved it a lot
and wouldn't mind seeing them again.

Another day at Aftershock

My days at Aftershock are coming to an end now.
Next week is my last week
however, we've come to an agreement that
I'll still be doing all the social media for the Manchester showroom.

I'm glad because I didn't want to leave
as I've started to know the staff and
connect with them.
I'll be still able to pop in and
photograph some stuff which
then will be transported onto the social media sites.
